Cairns Regional Group - JCU Chillers & The Cairns Institute Site Tour

About the tours:
JCU Chillers
The Central Energy Plant project for James Cook University at Cairns Campus Smithfield comprises an air conditioned chiller plant room to house three water cooled chillers, pumping and associated electrics.

Adjacent to the plant room is a 9mL litre thermal storage tank that allows chilled water to be prepared overnight using off peak electricity. The associated infrastructure trench works see the completion of the chilled water, high voltage and potable water ring mains to the Cairns Campus. Included in the trench works is a recycled water main for future connection. The chilled water plant and TES tank allows JCU’s Cairns Campus to drastically reduce their peak energy consumption and improve the overall efficiency of their chilled water. Main project statistics: 5 new 1.5MVA transformers, New main switch board, 3 New 4.2MW chillers with provision for 4th, 4 new cooling towers, 9m litre thermal storage tank, 1.5km of in ground chilled water pipe.
