Designed in Cairns is an initiative through the Australian Institute of Architects FNQ Regional Members Committee and held in conjunction with The Cairns Institute JCU. It provides continuing professional development activities for architects and designers generally in the regions. The series is based on a theme around Designed in Cairns.

This Seminar
Women in Design in the Tropics presents a forum of ideas and experiences from women in Architecture, Urban Design, Planning and Environment, Interiors and Communications from the Cairns region. This is a gathering of women with diverse experiences and interests in the Architectural and Urban Design Community in Cairns who are in varying life stages. They will share their experiences and ideas about being Women in Design in the Tropics. Their experience exceeds 125 years of collective practice. Each will present for 10-15mins, followed by a Q & A session chaired by Dr Shaneen Fantin, the chair of the FNQ committee of the Australian Institute of Architects.

THE PRESENTERS

 

Jane Hanan is a Director of Clarke and Prince Architects in Cairns. She has been practising architecture since the 1970s. Her wide experience includes master planning, design, documentation and contract administration of commercial, educational, institutional, residential and remote area projects. In Far North Queensland she has been instrumental in Ergon Energy projects, various inner city offices and shops, Skyrail buildings and progressive school developments ranging from kindergarten through to senior school.

Dr Lisa Law is a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, where she teaches urban geography and design. She is a geographer by training, and has over two decades experience researching urban social issues – mostly in Southeast Asia. Lisa’s evolving research interest is climate responsive design for tropical cities. She is Editor of Asia Pacific Viewpoint, a Wiley-Blackwell journal publishing articles in geography and allied disciplines about the Asia Pacific region. Prior to being at James Cook University, she was employed at the Australian National University, the University of Western Sydney, the National University of Singapore and the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

 

Gisela Jung is a Senior Architect and Urban Designer with CA Architects. She graduated as Architect and Urban Designer from Stuttgart University, Germany. She is a Green-Star accredited professional. Her experience includes residential and commercial projects, mixed-use institutional buildings as well as master planning and urban design. Gisela is a leader for sustainable design strategies and performance on CA Architects’ projects including William McCormack Stage 2 - the first 6 Star rated building in the tropics, the RPS Building - the first Green Star rated renovation in the FNQ region.

 

Kelly Reaston is currently the General Manager for Planning and Environment at Cairns Regional Council. A qualified commercial and planning and environment lawyer her portfolio includes Council's planning and economic development branches as well as a range of other services. Born and raised in Cairns and as a new mother, Kelly wants Cairns to be a city where her Son can enjoy a great “regional” childhood with all the benefits of a quality education and career opportunities. Kelly believes planning for Cairns should promote growth and development but maintain an expectation of superior design standards that protect our City’s unique tropical identity.

 

Anne-Marie Campagnolo is a Director of Jesse Bennett Architects with eight years’ experience in communications, marketing and recently in interior design. She worked closely with Jesse Bennett on the interior design of Planchonella House, which won the Robyn Dods award for residential architecture in Queensland in 2015. Anne-Marie is interested in the perception of tropical architecture and design by the Australian public.
