6th Engineer Support Regiment (Army) conducted a construction task in Pormpuraaw as part of an annual government program (Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program – AACAP). The project was a Men’s Shed. Pormpuraaw community is remotely located on Cape York in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The design brief included selecting materials and design processes that save on costs and combines building resilience for remote locations, where environmental conditions, a functional focus and consideration of lifecycle costs are paramount. Our past experience of understanding building element failures, costs and increased risk of cyclonic storm and flood damage, has led us to deliver a building that suits the community's long-term needs in a harsh tropical climate.
The functional rooms inside the shed were designed for energy efficiency, security and to be weather and vermin proof. The structural design process and selection of building materials focused on off- location manufacture and transportability to site.
